How we made Sandie’s Installation Ceremony a “day to remember”

In the summer of 2024, the University of Birmingham welcomed back a distinguished alumna, Sandie Okoro OBE, as its first female Chancellor. As one of Britain’s leading lawyers and a former student, Sandie’s appointment marked a historic moment in the University’s 125-year history.

So, how did we make this a day to remember?

Creative Media was tasked with crafting a suite of print and digital assets for the Installation Ceremony. These assets needed to honour the tradition and prestige of the occasion while also reflecting Sandie’s vibrant personality.

Our talented graphic designer, Alice, presented several concepts to the client. Collaborating with our Print team based in Kings Norton, Alice developed three visual styles for the event overview booklets, which were given to every attendee upon arrival. With an open brief, we had the creative freedom to explore various design elements such as foiling, cut-outs, and multiple folds.

Option 1: Reflecting Sandie’s vibrant personality through colour and cut-outs.

Option 2: Similarly reflecting Sandie’s colourful personality, this concept nods to the beautiful stained glass windows found in the Aston Webb building.

The final printed option, pictured by an attendee on the day. The design embodied the University’s sleek and premium feel, featuring a luxurious matte texture.

In addition to the event overview, our team designed and printed name cards, menu overviews, and table plans for the dinner that was held in Sandie’s honour that evening.

Our Media team was on-site all day, capturing engaging photographs and videos of the event. A highlight was recording the moment Sandie was presented with a personalised brooch, adding a personal touch to the memorable day. We later edited that footage into a video for Sandie (and anyone else!) to look back on.

The Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor couldn’t have been happier with how the event went. Below is their feedback to everyone involved in the day, and we are extremely proud of the part we had to play.

“Please know that the warmth and dedication you demonstrated in making this event so very special will remain with me for a long time to come. You made it a spectacular day to remember, not just for me and my family but for everyone who had the privilege to attend.

Thank you once again for your kindness, creativity, and attention to detail. I am so proud to be part of this incredible university community, and I look forward to many more moments of joy that we will celebrate together.”
